Herbology 101

This list is incomplete to say the least but hopefully I have touched on some of the most commonly used herbs that will help you in your search. There is a world of knowledge about the medical aspects of herbs and resins but we will not be covering that here.

NOTE: This is a work in progress and an enormous project. I will be adding more as time permits.

CALAMUS (Acorus calamus) - Feminine, Moon, Water

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Cancer; Secondary: Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio
WARNING: Potentially dangerous in large columes
GODS: Babalu Aye, Eleggua, Obatala, Oko, Olocun, Orunla
GODDESS: Ochun, Oya, Yemaya
PARTS USED: Root

MAGICAL: An infusion of Calamus is an excellent choice for home blessings and protection. If you have parpeted floors, just scatter the pleasant-smelling herb on the floor, leave overnight, and vacuum. This practice has been followed for centuries and has just recently been abandoned by the Norwich Cathedral, where the church once scattered Calamus root prior to festivals. Sometimes referenced as a hallucinogen, there is much confusion as to variety and donse. The powdered root is often a part of the recipe for healing incenses, but do not eat or it may have the opposite effect. Stimulant when a dried root 2 inches long and the thickness of a pencil is eaten; a hallucinogen when over 10 inches is eaten. Personal NOTE: I wouldn't eat it at all. There is too much confusion as to the dose.

CALENDULA (Calendula officinalis) - Masculine, Sun, Fire

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Leo; Secondary: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
GODS: Shango, Eleggua, Obatala, Oko, Orunla
PARTS USED: Flower, Herbs, Leaves

MAGICAL: Dried Calendula flowers are used in incense recipes for divination. A simple incense for burning while reading the tarot can be made by mixing 1 part Calendula, 1 part Gum Arabic, and 1 part Lavender. Grind into a powder and burn over charcoal as you conduct tarot readings. Fresh flowers can be maixed with a salad to promote a sense of well-being and an uplifting feeling. The fresh flowers are brought or grown in the bedroom to promote psychic dreams. They are simmered to promote calm and health.

CAMELLIA (Camellia japonica) - Feminine, Moon, Water

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Cancer; Secondary: Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio

MAGICAL: Camellia, especially fresh flowers, is said to lend itself well to spells for money and wealth.

CAMPHOR (Cinnamonum camphora) - Feminine, Moon, Water

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Cancer; Secondary: Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio
GODS: Babalu Aye, Chandra, Eleggua, Oko, Olocun, Orunla
GODDESS: Artemis, Yemaya
PARTS USED: Gum extract

MAGICAL: Small amounts of natural Camphor are used in brews and mixtures to aid divination. These mixtures are not consumed. Instead, boil equal amounts (by weight) of natural Camphor and Lavender flowers in a pot of water. Inhale the fumes as you gaze into a scrying mirror or other scrying device. Small amounts mixed with Sandalwood makes a pleasant divination incense. Inhaling Camphor is also said to quiet sexual appetite and is used in celibacy preparations. In the modern world, we have yet another concern: synthetic camphor. always check for the Latin name on this one. Yes, natural Camphor costs a great deal more than synthetic, but the snythetic offers none of the magical benefits. True essential oil of Camphor does exist, but the great majority of what is on the market is synthetic. It's scent clears the mind of bodily desires, especially lust. The essential oil is also diffused to speed healing, especially from the common cold. However, it should not be used directly from the bottle because it tends to cause headaches in pure form.

CARAWAY (Carum Carvi) - Masculine, Mercury, Air

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Gemini, Virgo; Secondary: Aquarius, Gemini, Libra
GODS: Shango, Olocun, Oggun

MAGICAL: Scattering Caraway in a footlocker, money box, or other place where valuables are hidden well will ward off thieves. Caraway inspires lust when used as an ingredient in breads and cakes without a lot of sugar. For help in school, chew Caraway seeds while you study. When it comes time for a test, slip a few between your cheek and gum when you enter the classroom, and chew during the test. Eating the seeds will also stimulate a strong sense of both love and lust. the are an excellent choice for inclusion in a romantic dinner. Essential oil of Caraway will improve the phsical and conscious act of lovemaking when diffused into a room. Its scent promotes reciprocity and can greatly enhance the act of love should one lover have inhibitions based on social taboo, but don't think it will work on the receiving end of a sexual act alone. Here, the word reciprocity is key. If using this oil to enhance lovemaking, remember that you will only receive that which you first give. Generally speaking, its scent stimulates both mind and body; however, it does not stimulate love itself. That, you and your partner will have to provide for yourselves.

CARDAMOM (Elettaria cardamonmum) - Feminine, Venus, Water

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Libra, Taurus; Secondary: Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio
PARTS USED: Oil, seed
GODDESS: Erzulie

MAGICAL: to inspire lust, soak ground seeds in a sweet red wine overnight. As you drift off to sleep, imagine yourself in your lover's arms. The next day, strain the seeds from the wine, sweeten with honey from local fields, and serve warm over a romantic dinner. In Germany, smart shopkeepers use similar recipes during the Yule season, giving out hot spiced sine to totential customers. What better way to increase the amount they will spend on a gift for their lovers than to heighten their desires? If your lover does not drink wine, serve a romantic dinner. With dessert, serve coffee brewed with ground Cardamom seeds and sweetened with natural sugar (not honey). The seeds can also be included in sachets and incenses, but these practices are much less effective than the wine potion mentioned above. Essential oil of Cardamom is diffused to increase appetite. Used prior to and in conjunction with the ideas listed above, it is a most excellent scent to promote love - and if the timing is right, tender lovemaking.

CARNATION (Dianthus carophyllus) - Masculine, Sun, Fire

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Leo; Secondary: Aries, Leo Sagittarius
GODS: Bablu aye, Shango, Jupiter, Obatala, Oggun
GODDESS: Yemaya

MAGICAL: a fresh Carnation is a perfectly functional - as well as covert - talisman of protection. Wear in the buttonhole of an off-white shirt with a nice tie, and it will build the confidence needed to guard against a hostile workplace or an often unpleasant world. Given as gifts to travelers, they are said to ensure a safe journey. The help to speed healing when given to sick friends as living plants, and the dried flowers are used for the same purpose in incense and sachet recipes. Like the rose, the scent of fresh Carnations has been almost lost due to selective breeding for appearance. Unlike the rose, a true essential oil of Carnation is rearely (if ever) available. If you should receive red Carnations, it is possible their scent will stir love. However, other colors seem to have no iffect, and there are much better fresh flowers for this purpose.

CAROB (Ceratonia siliqua) - Feminine, Venus, Water

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Libra, Taurus; Secondary: Cancer, Pisces, Virgo

MAGICAL: Carob is used for both protection and to ensuring health. As it is a magical substitute for chocolate, it will also stir feeling of love. You can usually find it in powder form at your local grocery store. If not, try a health or natural food store. It can be mixed into just about anything warm.

CASHEW (Anacardium occidentale) - Masculine, Sun, Fire

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Leo; Secondary: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
PARTS USED: Nut

MAGICAL: Cashews can be worn in a green sachet as a money-drawing talisman as well as a tasty snak.

CATNIP (Nepeta cataria) - Feminine, Venus, Water

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Libra, Taurus; Secondary: Cancer, Pisces, Virgo
GODDESS: Bast, Ochun
PARTS USED: Herb

MAGICAL: When we were young, many of us became "blood brothers" by cutting our palms with a friend and then holding hands. In a day when we are more aware and concerned about disease, Catnip is a good substitute. to remain forever friends, place fresh Catnip in your hand and shake the hand of your best friend while telling him or her what you are up to with the herb. Dried Catnip is mixed with Rose petals and placed in a pink sachet to attract love. A tincture of dried Catnip and Roses can be made for the same purpose. Use the mixture as perfume. Growing Catnip in your garden and outside the house will cause baneful spirits to depart and pleasant spirits to be attracted. but be careful, because if the field is large enough, the pleasant spirits will ride in on the backs of _ you guessed it _ cats! They love the stuff. If grown without a barrier, it will sppread at a rate of almost double every season. Fresh Catnip leaves can be simmered in water to promote a sense of peace and relaxation in the home.

CATTAILS (Typha capensis) - Masculine, Mars, Fire

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Aries, Scorpio; Secondary: Aries, Leo, sagittarius

MAGICAL: Cattails are one of the greatest herbs to serve as a phallic symbol to represent our Horned Lord. In a pinch, natural cattails make great wands.

CAYENNE (Capsicum minimum) - Masculine, Mars, Fire

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Aries, Scorpio; Secondary: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
GODS: Eleggua
PARTS USED: Fruit

MAGICAL: The words Cayenne and capsicum both find their root in the ancient Greek word for "to bite," and that is exactly what this friend does; it takes a bit out of baneful magic that has been worked against you. Sprinkle Cayenne around the entrance to your home, or hang it in the four corners to chomp down on baneful magic. In cooking, Cayenne will bring on physical passion and lustful thoughts. The body seems to respond to being bitten by releasing endorphins to numb the pain. When a goodly amount of Cayenne is doing the biting, the body tends to release enough of those natural intoxicants to lift the heart as well as bury a few inhibitions.

CEDAR (Cedrus atlantica/Cedrus libani/Cedrus spp.) - Masculine, Sun, Fire

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Leo; Secondary: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
NOTE: Also known as Cedarwood
GODS: Amun-Ra, Brahma, Babalu Aye, Shango, Indra, Jupiter, Obatala, Odin, Poseidon
GODDESS: Ochun

MAGICAL: It was burned with Sagebrush for the same purpose. This is probably why it is sometimes cited as one of the nine woods referred to in the Wiccan Rede, but that reference seems to be found only in the references of North American Wiccans who often borrow from indigenous cultures. Cedar in the wallet attracts money. Cedar powder in a sachet attracts love. But Cedar is better suited for purfication rites. Fresh Cedar twigs are often placed on top of the hot rocks in a sweat lodge; the resulting steam was considered the best way to purify mind, body, and spirit. Many other cultures burned it in bonfires for the same purpose. Add Wood Betony for an extra effect. Cedar powder is often added to incense to produce a similar effect. Essential oil of Cedar promotes the sensation of positive connections with our Lord and the masculine half of Divinity.

CHAMOMILE (Chameamelum nobile/Anthemis nobilis) - Feminine, Venus, Water

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Libra, Taurus/Leo(flower); Secondary: Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio
GODS: Shango, Olocun
GODDESS: Ochun
PARTS USED: Glowers, Herb, Oil

MAGICAL: The Saxon name for common Chamomile is Maythen, which is where this wonderful flower obtains much of its magical lore and why if you see a recipe calling for Chamomile, it is probably asking for this variety. A strong but unsweetened infusion of Chamomile is said to be one of the best aids in sleep a person could choose. Add a few drops of Lavender oil to your pillow, drink a cup of Chamomile infusion before bed, and it is lights out when the lights go out. that same infusion is said to draw love when mixed with the bath water or luck at gambling when used to wash the hands. Try mixing some baking soda into your Chamomile infusion, then use the mix in your bath prior to a romantic evening. In the home, an infusion of Chamomile can be mixed into mop water or sprinkled in the flower bed. Dried whole flowers can be scattered the night before and then swept up in the morning. The scent is divine and is said to bless the home as well as remove spells cast against both home and inhabitants. Essential oil of Common Chamomile is precious and expensive. It is diffused to bring on sleep. Mixed with equal amounts of Lavender oil, it makes an even better oil for htis purpose.

CHERRY (Prunus avium) - Feminine, Venus, Water

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Libra, Taurus; Secondary: Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio
PARTS USED: Fruit, Stalks

MAGICAL: In love spells, Cherry juice substitutes for both Dove's Blood and one's own. However, many supppliers of spellcraft components offer Dove's Blood Ink, which works as well or better (and contains no actual blood). A simple love spell can be made by dipping a Cherry in whippind cream or powdered sugar and feeding it to your lover by it's stem.

CHICKWEED (Stellaria media) - Feminine, Moon, Water

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Cancer; Secondary: Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio
PARTS USED: Herb
GODDESS: Ochun

MAGICAL: Chickweed is added to sauce (particularly tomato) and served with a meal (particularly pasta) to encourage fidelity in a marriage or monogamous relationship. However, should you be the one to have strayed or should you become the one who strays, Chickweed will ensure that your lover does as well. Call it poetic justice, cause and effect, or common sense - whatever it is, this plant certainly seems to speed up the magical observation that like attracts like. If you are thinking about following a recipe for fidelity or love that suggests using menstrual blood in the spaghetti sauce, better to substitute Chickweed. Oh, if he finds out about your manipulation he might be upset, but not nearly as upset as if he had found out you followed that original recipe.

CHICORY (Cichorium intybus) - Masculine, Sun, Air

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Leo; Secondary: Aquarius, Gemini, Leo
PARTS USED: Flowers, Root

MAGICAL: Mix Chicory with coffee grounds; brew and drink prior to a job interview or other exchange where you might need the blessings of a favor. While asking for that job or favor, be sincere and the Chicory will lend itself to both sincerity and good fate. Fresh Chicory is carried in the pockets for the same general purpose.

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Leo; Secondary: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
GODS: Aeacus, Babalu Aye, Helios, Orunla, Ra, Surya
GODDESS: Aphrodite, Ochun, Oya, Venus
PARTS USED: Bark

MAGICAL: Burn 1 part Cinnamon with 3 parts Gum Arabic for a simple money-drawing incense. It is a major component of incenses intended to attract love and money, as well as those to inspire lust and heighten psychic energy. Cinnamon is sometimes used in love-and-lust-inducing recipes. Essential oil of cinnamon is often used in oil blends intended to enhance psychic abilities. It is also sometimes used as a primary ingredient of Initiation oils. Although most of these oils are blended such that a permanent mark is not left from the oil, it may certainly feel as if one is.

CITRON (Citnus medica) - Masculine, Sun, Air

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Leo; Secondary: Aquarius, Gemini, Libra
GODS: Babalu Aye, Obatala, Orunla
GODDESS: Yemaya

MAGICAL: When eaten, Citron enhances natural psychic powers and empathy in particular. It is most often available as a candied fruit. Sometimes used in conjunction with Camphor for healing spells. Some speculate that it was the citron and not the Apple that is referred to in the story of Adam and Eve. The curse that came with that meal was more of a cause and effect: They ate of the forbidden fruit and suffered the pain of empathy.

CLEAVERS (Galium aparine) - Feminine, Saturn, Water

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Aquarius, Capricorn; Secondary: Aquarius, Gemini, Libra
PARTS USED: Herb

CLOTH OF GOLD CROCUS (Crocus angustifolia) - Masculine, Sun, Fire

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Leo; Secondary: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Libra, Taurus; Secondary: Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo
GODS: Cinteotl, Gwion, Oko
GODDESS: Corn Goddess/Mother
PARTS USED: Husk, Seeds, Silk

MAGICAL: Laced on a necklace or ground into a powder, blue Corn is used to bring the blessings of Mother Earth in her incarnation as Corn Mother. Red Corn is ground and mixed with incense to aid childbirth. Interestingly enough, the color associations with the four cardinal directions by today's Wiccans may have been influenced by pre- Columbian people. Similar color associations were made by some of the Pueblo people of Western New Mexico (the Zuni in particular). Generally, Wiccans use green for North (Earth), but the other three are strikingly similar to modern convention:
East (Air) - White Corn; South (Fire) - Red Corn; West (Water) - Blue Corn; North (Earth) - Yellow Corn

CUMIN (Cuminmum cyminum) - Masculine, Mars, Fire

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Aries, Scorpio; Secondary: Aries, Leo Sagittarius

MAGICAL: Ground and scattered on the floor, it guards the home and brings the blessings of love. In a fine white sachet, it was carried by brides to ensure that baneful forces did not attack her wedding, and then the sachet was given to her husband to ensure his fidelity. Lore states that if a new husband wears a sachet of Cumin around his neck as he makes love to his bride, the scent of the Cumin will ensure her conception. For a quick and easy lust potion, serve it to your lover on a cold night in fron of a warm fire. Pour two glasses of wine and sprinkle equal amounts of powered Cumin in each glass, warm by the fire, and drink together. Passion and lust will certaily follow. If it does not, repeat. Crushed Cumin seeds are added to potpouri and simmered to fill the home with a sense of security. The scent will mildly elevate existing lust.

CURRY BLACK (Murraya koenigii) - Masculine, Mars, fire

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Aries, Scorpio; Secondary: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

MAGICAL: When you see a reference to Curry outside of a cookbook, you are probably looking for the specific plant Murray koeniggi and not the blend of spices called for in cookbooks by the same name. Reportedly, if one burns Curry at night, it will keep away evil spirits. I have never found the burning of Curry to do anything other than stick up the house.

CYCLAMEN IVY LEAVED (Cyclamen hederaefolium) - Feminine, Venus, Water

However, there is some information indicating that overconsumption may be dangerous. The problem is that references are not specific as to what a safe dose is.

CYPRESS (Cupressus sempervirens) - Feminine, Saturn, Earth

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Aquarius, Capricorn; Secondary: Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo
NOTE: Also known as "The Tree of Death"
GODS: Apollo, Babalu Aye, Brahma, Shango, Cupid, Jupiter, Mithras, Oggun, Pluto, Saturn

A Cypress flower arrangement is an excellent gift at a wake, or sentt to the home of one who is grieving. A branch of Cypress waved over the sick is said to obsorb the sickness. Burn the branch after used to destroy the sickness that was removed. A small sprig of Cypress gently tied to a rose will bless the deceased and help him or her to move on. Essential oil of Cypress is diffused to ease grief and transition.
