Herbology 101

This list is incomplete to say the least but hopefully I have touched on some of the most commonly used herbs that will help you in your search. There is a world of knowledge about the medical aspects of herbs and resins but we will not be covering that here.

NOTE: This is a work in progress and an enormous project. I will be adding more as time permits.

ACACIA (Acacia Senega) - Masculine, Sun, Air

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Leo; Secondary: Aquarius, Gemini, Libra
GODS: Adonis, Amun Ra, The Buddha, Apollo, Kirshna, Osiris, Ra, Vishnu, Babalu Aye
GODDESS: Astate, Diana, Ishtar

MAGICAL: In the Middle and Far East, the wood of the Acacia plant is used to build temples and sacred sites as it is believed that structures built of its wood offer protection against far more than the weather. Most readers are not forfunate enough to have access to large amounts of Acacia wood. When ordering herbs, if you ask for whole Acacia, you will usually receive enought twigs to braid small charms. These simple charms are worn for protection. When given as fifts, they promote friendship and kindred love. Acacia flowers can be powered and mixed with equal amounts of Sandalwood. When burned, this mixture may stimulate areas of the brain responsible for psychic abilities.

GENERAL: Acacia flowers attract bugs rapidly. Always store in an absolutely sealed container, but don't be surprised if insects seem to spawn spontaneously. Chances are that no matter how thoroughly the plant material is cleaned, it will include near- microscopic insect larvae.

ACONITE (Aconitum napellus) POISON - Feminine, Saturn, Water

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Aquarius, Capricorn; Secondary: Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio
GODDESS: Hecate, Medea

MAGICAL: Aconite has been known and used as a poison for thousands of years. Per Greek lore, Hecate created it from the foam of Cerberus. Aconite is one of the ingredients often found in traditional flying ointments. However, it is entirely too dangerous to use. How dangerous? It has also been extracted and concentrated for use in making poison arrows and darts. Aconite is still used to charge and bless the athame and tools used in protection. However, such practices can be very hazardous.

ADAM & EVE ROOT (Orchis spp.) POISON - Feminine, Venus, Water

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Libra, Taurus; Secondary: Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio
GODDESS: Ochun, Venus, Vesta

MAGICAL: Adam and Eve Root is said to promote romantic love and to ensure fidelity between a loving couple. It has sometimes been used as a protection talisman for the marital home or bed. Although the plant is generally considered to have feminine properties, the root comes in two varieties: male and female. Determining which is which is not difficult as they are most often sold in pairs (one male and one female), and one look at the two is enough to understand why. The male root has convex veins and the female has concave veins. Traditionally, a single male and female root are sewn into a pink sachet and given as a gift to each member of a relationship to ensure the love, fidelity, and happiness of the couple. However, if the couple is of the same sex or the prtnership includes more than two, there is no reason the combination of roots should not match the combination of genders in the relationship being blessed.

GENERAL: Although originally separate roots, today the name Adam and Eve Root is used to refer to a wide variety of roots that cross with Lucky Hand Root. It seems that in today's marketplace, the difference between Adam and Eve Root and Lucky Hand Root is based only on the look of the root. Due to the tremendous number of citations in which they share Latin names, it is impossible to separate the two.

AGRIMONY (Agrimonia eupatoria) - Masculine, Jupiter, Air

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Pisces, Sagittarius; Secondary: Aquarius, Gemini, Libra

MAGICAL: Agrimony has long been held to protect from all forms of attacks, including poison. In a time when such things seemed prudent, Agrimony tea and honey consumed each morning was sometimes used to protect one from attack by poison. Worn in a sachet around the neck or carried in the pocket, Agrimony helps protect the user. Sewn into a pillow, Agrimony aids sleep. Fill a bowl of Agrimony with white vinegar, let sit for three days, strain, and bottle. This easy mixture can be sprinkled outside the home to turn back baneful magick.

AGUE ROOT (Aletris farinosa)

MEDICAL: Cathartic, Emetic, Narcotic (mildly). When dried, the medicinal properties of this plant are vastly decreased. Fresh root is used in making of a tincture. A typical dose is 10 drops diluted in a glass of water.
PARTS USED: Fresh root

MAGICAL: Powder the root and then sprinkle in a circular pattern around an area you seek to protect. Warm a mixture of 1 part ground Ague Root, 1 part water, and 2 parts red wine vinegar. Allow to soak for no less than three hours. The resulting mixture can be strained, bottled, and then used for returning and unhexing spells.

ALFALFA (Medicago saliva) - Feminine, Venus, Earth

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Libra, Taurus; Secondary: Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo

MAGICAL: Burn Alfalfa in ritual fires and as incense during focused works for prosperity. Scatter the ashes outside your home to keep its residents from wanting for food. Alfalfa can be carried in a green sachet to encourage prosperity, especially when job hunting or when putting forth that extra effort at jobs where one is paid commission. If you own your own business, try sprinkling it on the floors at night and then thoroughly sweeping in the morning. An infusion of Alfalfa can be mixed into your mop water and then used to clean the home of properties that might prevent prosperity.

ALLSPICE (Pimenta officinalis) - Masculine, Mars, Fire

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Aires, Scorpio; Secondary: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
GODS: Aeacus, Babalu Aye, Shango, Eleggua, Obatala, Ochosi, Oko, Olocun
GODDESS: Ochun, Yemaya

MAGICAL: Allspice is a common component of incenses for money and healing. Place a handful of dried Allspice berries in a green sachet for luck at gambling and in all matters of fiance.

NOTE: Sometimes listed as Feminine, Jupiter, and Earth.

ALMOND (Prunus communis) - Masculine, Mercury, Air

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Gemini, Virgo; Secondary: Aquarius, Gemini, Libra
GODS: Attis, Babalu Aye, Chandra, Hermes, Jupiter, Liber Pater, Mercury, Obatala, Odin, Oko, Olocun, Ptah, Thoth, Zeus
GODDESS: Artemis, Diana, Ochun, Yemaya

MAGICAL: Almonds have a bit of lore that I have difficulty including while keeping a straight face. Their folk name is Gree Nuts, and they were sacred to the self-castrated Greek god Attis. Almond wood has been carved into charms to promote prosperity, wealth, and riches. Climbing an Almond tree prior to beginning a business venture is said to guarantee success. Eating and carring Almonds promotes prosperity, speeds emotional healing, and mends broken hearts. A green sachet containing Almonds makes a wonderful gift to kith and kin when moving into a new home or starting a new venture. Almond wood is an excellent choice for crafting of wands.

ALOE (Aloe Vera) - Feminine, Moon, Water

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Cancer Secondary: Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio
GODS: Aeacus, Amun-Ra, Chandra, Indra, Minos, Rhadamanthus, Vulcan
GODDESS: Artemis

MAGICAL: Aloe Vera has been hung over the entrance to homes and rooms to welcome good luck and to drive out forces contrary to a content home. An expression of the Aloe Vera is rubbed into the hands to bring propserity and to improve luck at games of chance.

AMARANTH (Amaranthus hypochondriacus) - Feminine, Saturn, Fire

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Aquarius, Capricorn; Secondary: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
GODS: Amun-Ra, Buddha, Vishnu
GODDESS: Artemis, Athena, Nut

MAGICAL: Dried Amaranth flowers scattered as you cast the Circle of a Samhain rite will help you to make contact with past loved ones. Carried in the pocket or in a sachet against the breast will ease a broken heart and sooth the pain of loosing a loved one.

AMBER (Succinum) - Masculine, Sun, Fire

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Leo; Secondary: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

MAGICAL: Amber is often worn for protection. In some traditions of Wicca, it is worn as a necklace with alternating Jet beads to represent the union of our Lord (Amber) with our Lady (Jet).

NOTE: The amber that is listed here is a fossil resin from the extinct coniferous tree. It is most often listed as a gemstone in Western references. If your cource material is of Western origin, chances are your are looking for Liquid Amber or St. John's Wort. If it is of Eastern origin, it is probably a referencde to Amber as a fossil.

ANEMONE (Anemone pulsatilla) - Masculine, Mars, Fire

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Aries, Scorpio; Secondary: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
GODS: Adonis

MAGICAL: Planted in the four corners of a plot of land, red Anemone will lend its influence toward protecting those who call that land home. Growing Anemone around a ritual Circle will cause that Circle to be twice smiled upon by those forces that watch over the rites that take place within. The fresh flowers can be picked and worn in a green sachet to drive away spring fever and minor colds.

ANGELICA (Angelica archangelica) - Masculine, Sun, Fire

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Leo; Secondary: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
GODS: Shango, Eleggua, Obatala, Oggun, Oko, Olocun, Babalu Aye
GODDESS: Venus, Yemaya

MAGICAL: A warm water infusion of Angelica root can be used in bath or mop water to ward off menacing forces. To strengthen that infusion, use white wine vinegar instead of water. Carried in a green sachet, Angelica root is said to be lucky to the gambler. There is some lore that visions will occur when the leaves of the Angelica plant are smoke, but his practice is ill-advised.

ANISE (Piminella anisum) - Masculine, Jupiter, Air

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Pisces, Sagittarius; Secondary: Aquarius, Gemini, Libra
GODS: Babalu Aye, Shango, Eleggua, Ochosi, Oggun, Olocun, Orunla
GODDESS: Ochun, Oya

MAGICAL: Sewn into a pillow, Anise seeds ward off unpleasant dreams and nightmares. An infusion of Anise seeds or Anise seeds mixed with bay leaves makes an excellent purification bath, especially for the lustral bath. Powder Anise seeds and mix with your coffee grounds. A pot brewed with this mixture will greatly enhance your feeling of youthfulness throughout the day, especially if sweetened with local honey. Mix one to one with bay leaf and then use to creat an infusion for adding to a purification bath. Will promote a sense of love when used in cooking.

APPLE (Pyrus malus) NOTE: Apple Seeds are POISONOUS - Feminine, Venus, Water

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Libra, Taurus; Secondary: Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio
GODS: Apollo, Shango (blossom), Dionysus, Olocun (blossom), Tegid, Zeus
GODDESS: Athena, Aphrodite, Astarte, Cerridwen, Diana, Freya, Gaia, Hera, Ochun (blossom), Venus, Pomona, Nemesis, Ishtar, Olwyn, Gwen, Arwen
CELTIC TREE CALENDAR (Quert) - September 2nd thru September 29th _ The tenth month of the year.

MAGICAL: One of the nine woods said to be best for ritual fires. Apples are often used to decorate the Wiccan altar, especially on Samhain. Apples are considered one of the favorite foods of the dead, but consider the personal preferences of ancestors to be more important than this general suggestion. Apples are an almost universal love food. Sharing Apples as part of a romantic dinner will further the pursuits of love. Substituting hard sparkling cider for champagne is said to encourage lovemaking. Apple wood is ideal for use in making love charms, as is the dried fruit. If two amulets are made from the same branch or two slices from the same Apple are dried, the bond of love is strengthened and the romantic portion of the relationship is heightened when the amulets are worn by each member of a loving partnership.

To experience purity in the act of love, let the lovers' first night be spent under an Apple tree. Better this be on their wedding night, surrounded by an encampment of family and friends who wish the couple well. If the following morning is met with mist, any child conceived of that night is said to be blessed twice by our Lord and Lady. More so than with apricots, Apples seem to heighten sexual desire in men. They are especially useful in pursuits of women by men, but gay men have been reported of saying that they are completely useless when one man is attempting to woo another in anything other than the bedroom. The scent of the Apple flower is intoxication. Although they do not fit well into a vase, the can be used to scent a person and home by adding the fresh flowers to a bath. Alternatively, the fresh flowers can be added to a potpourri or simmer pot, but do not use dried flowers, as the simply do not seem to work. If you want to experiment with the many apple blossom oils on the market, please do, but do not expect good results, as everything I have found is synthetic (fragrance oils).

ARABIC, GUM (Acacia sengal) - Masculine, Sun, Air

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Leo; Secondary: Aquarius, Gemini, Libra

MAGICAL: Gum Arabic is one of the most widely used herbs in most Wiccans' collections. Alone, it is burned on charcoal for purification and to aid in connecting with an inner sense of spirituality. However, it is also widely used as a binding agaent in many incense blends.

ASAFOETIDA (Ferula assafoetida) - Masculine, Mars, Fire

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Aries, Scorpio; Secondary: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
GODS: Babalu Aye, Shango, Eleggua, Ochosi, Oggun
GODDESS: Athena, Oko, Yemaya
PARTS USED: An extract of the root

MAGICAL: When eaten, promotes cognitive functions. Parents have been known to insist that their children wear sachets of Asafoetida around their necks to ward off childhood illness. Chances are the foul-smelling herb also drove away many childhood friends. Asafoetida is sometimes used in exorcisms and is thrown into the censer when wanting spirits to depart quickly (along with your worldly guests).

GENERAL: WARNING: This is by far the single worst smelling herb you will ever have the misfortune of smelling. So disgusting is its stench, grown men have been known to vomit upon one snitt. Warnings say not to feed Asafoedia to a child but I say do not feed to anyone.

ASH (Fraxinus excelsior) - Masculine, Sun, Fire

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Leo; Secondary: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
GODS: Brahma, Gwydion, Mars, Nemesis, Neptune, Odin, Poseidon, Saturn, Thor, Uranus
CELTIC TREE CALENDAR (Nion) - Febuary 18th thru March 17th - The third month of the year.
PARTS USED: Leave, Bark

MAGICAL: The strongest association one can find for the Ash is the Norse association with the World Tree, Ygdrasill. For this reason, the Ash has been associated with the working of magick for countless years. Its wood is sacred to Poseidon, and , as such, is often used in charms and spells to ensure the safe passage over water. Sleeping in a bed made of Ash wood or on a pillow with Ash leaves is said to encourage prophetic dreams, as well as visions of the past, which one might have overlooked. When given as a gift to a new couple, a besom (broom) whose staff is made of Ash is not only a great blessing, it is also a good protective talisman when hung on or over the front door. Charms made of Ash are said to keep away snakes. As a love charm, Ash leaves are often carried in the pocket to attract the opposite sex. Planting an Ash tree at each of the corners of a homestead or around ritual areas will protect that area. The Ash is referred to in the British Tree Fairy Triad, as well as the many others that have sprouted up, citing three sacred trees as Oak, Ash and Thorn.

ASPEN, American (Poplus tremullides) - Feminine, Saturn, Water

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Aquarius, Capricorn; Secondary: Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio
GODS: Brahma, Jupiter, Pluto, Zeus
GODDESS: Leuce, Oya
CELTIC TREE CALENDAR (Eadha) - Fall Equinox

MAGICAL: The fresh leaves of Poplar (Aspen) are shredded and then gently warmed with olive oil for several hours. Cool, allow to sit for one week, warm again, and strain while warm. Mix equal amounts of beeswax by colume, warm and stir; then warm until al the beeswax has melted. When this mixture cools, it can be used as a substitute for the more dangerous flying ointments.

ASTER (Callisterphus chinensis) - Feminine, Venus,Water

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Libra, Taurus; Secondary: Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio

MAGICAL: Aster was grown outside Greek temples as a tribute to all of the Greek (and to to a lesser degree, the Roman) gods and goddesses, but especially as an honor to the goddess Venus. Plant it in your home or garden to attract love. Give thanks to the plant for its flowers, then carry the flowers to triumph in the game that love sometimes becomes. Statuary of Venus surrounded by fresh Aster flowers goes a long way towards winning a bit of divine guidance or intervention in an often troublesome or conflicted relationship.

AVENS (Geum urbanum) - Masculine, Jupiter, Fire

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Pisces, Sagittarius; Secondary: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
PARTS USED: Herb, Root

MAGICAL: Avens are worn by men to attract women. It is also worn as an amulet of protection.

AVOCADO (Persea americans) - Feminine, Fenus, Water

ASTROLOGICAL: Primary: Libra, Taurus; Secondary: Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio

MAGICAL: Reportedly, eating Avocado will infuse a man with lust. This, as well as the fruit shaped might be why the Aztecs call it Ahuacotl, which means "testicle tree." Then again, it probably has more to do with the look of the plant. Growing an Avocado tree in your bedroom will reportedly infuse the area with a healthy desire for the act of love. Wands and hilts of athames made of Avocado wood are reportedly especially powerful.
